Review of the Hostal Residencia Valencia, Madrid, Spain.

Here is an example of what you get in the inexpensive range of accommodation:

Hostal Residencia Valencia, 44 Gran Via, Madrid. Phone #: 91 522 11 15 (from US 011-349-1-522-1115) Fax No. 420 0564
I found my Madrid accommodation through Frommer's site. As I recall, for one person and a bathroom, the room cost about $32.00 a night (March '99). The hostal occupies 2 floors of the center building above. I must have walked past their door 5 times. I never looked up to see the sign above. Lucky for me, I started to check open doors. The hotel's name was painted on the door. The Valencia is located on the 7th floor(?).
The room was clean (before I got there) and well maintained. Furniture was functional though well used.
The room had a private bathroom (toilet not shown). I don't recall ever having a large bathtub in any of my rooms. Generally the tub is half size and used primarily as a shower. Stoppers for the tubs are usually not available in these inexpensive hotales.

.Most of the time there was an English speaking staff person on duty. Given my limited Spanish speaking abilities, this was a nice feature.

I found the H.R. Valencia to be a noisy hostal. I had read of Madrid as a party city and at first I thought it was Spaniards returning form late night celebration. Later, I realized the voices, for the most part, were speaking English. The clerk verified for me later it was those "noisy Americans" waking me up in the middle of the night. I stayed at the Valencia on two different occasions with 2 1/2 weeks between the stays. Noise was a problem on both visits. On a later visit to Spain I stayed at another Hostal on the Gran Via and noise was again a problem. Other than the noise, the Valencia was a satisfactory hostal for the price.
