Visiting a museum about the Americas, when you have all of Spain to see, doesn't seem right to us "Americans." Yet, the Museo de Americas is well worth the time it takes to visit.
One room in the museum is filled with pre-Columbian gold. These photographs only show a small sample.

The Spaniards started collecting "American" artifacts starting with Columbus. Unfortunately, much of this early collection was lost during fires at the Royal Palace. Much of the current collection comes from excavations conducted in the 1700's. |

The museum is located at the base of this structure (the Obseratorio). We walked from the Plaza de Callao and took a few wrong turns before we located it. If you don't get lost, it's only a brisk, 30 minute walk from the Callao. |

One exhibit documents the early spread across Europe of information on the Americas. Fantastic creatures and bizarre people are depicted in the "newspapers" of the time. The museum covers all of the Americas, North and South. |
