| In looking for a
city to explore in northern
Spain, I was enticed to Burgos by
photographs of the lattice-decorated
spires of its cathedral. Once in
the presence of the cathedral, I
was struck immediately by the
uniquely decorative carvings that
dominate almost every inch of its
exterior.

You might read in a
guidebook about the steel-gray
spires of the cathedral, but due to
a recent cleaning, the cathedrals
color is now more of a warm tan.
Burgos has been a
nexus of historical events. Located on
the pilgrimage route to Santiago, it was
the capital of the Castile Kingdom for
500 years and during the Spanish Civil
War, Francos headquarters.
