Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, located at the southernmost tip of Spain, is a beautiful day trip destination. With its famous 426m high limestone Rock of Gibraltar towering over the city, which legend says to be one of the Pillars of Hercules, it’s not easy to miss when you’re close by.
The Rock is home to the Barbary Macaques monkey, and with more than 40% of Gibraltar being declared a nature reserve, it makes for a great hike to the top. The Rock of Gibraltar rests in the historical city of Gibraltar, a British overseas territory. After changing hands many times over the centuries. It’s eventual ownership by Britain begun in the 1700s, after which they used it as a naval chokepoint in WWII.
It now sees just about all of the ships passing through the Mediterranean and is close enough that you can see Morocco and its own mirrored mountains, far into Africa across the strait.

The Rock is also a national park, home to some wondrous fauna and flora – including some lovely local monkeys! It is also the main attraction on this island due to its sheer size, as well as its Spanish, British and Roman history. The Gibraltar Museum is a must-see spot along the way, documenting the tumultuous history of the small peninsula as it’s changed hands over the years.
The town is full of small sights like the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Crowned – built on the site where a Moorish Mosque was destroyed when the Catholic Monarchs regained rule around the 15th century.
On the trip to Gibraltar, you’ll also find the ruins of the Roman City Baleo Claudia, which was ruined by earthquakes and completely abandoned by the 6th century. Baleo Claudia was an important historical trade route between North Africa and Europe, and it’s one of Andalucia’s most well-preserved archaeological sites.
There you can see in person what the shape and form of an ancient Roman town was like. Right next to this is Bolonia Beach, one of the 5 most beautiful beaches in Spain, and one of the most popular beach spots along the Iberian Southern Coast.

Here’s some info about the tour of Gibraltar. It’s a small place with a lot to do, so be sure to dress appropriately for the weather as it can get very, very, hot in summer. If you’re staying in Seville, or another nearby city, we suggest you rent a car (with several rental options here). You can also catch public transport, but the trip can take up to double the time.

The tour starts in the morning and takes place over eight hours through the middle part of the day. It’s a full day trip.

We arranged for the tour about 2 weeks before and paid extra for a tour of the war caves of 1940, for Saturday, March 16., 2019. Asked when we boarded the bus if it took us to the war caves or if we had t change. We were assured it took us to the caves. Near the end of our tour we passed the entrance to the caves and kept going. The drive, Eddy, stopped a little ways further down the road and told us the tour was over. No tour of the caves because it is closed on Saturdays!!!! I expect a credit to my Credit card equal the the extra Euros paid for 8 people, 7 adults and one child age 11. Very disappointed in being mislead. I had spent time with my grandchildren discussing WWII and the significance of this side trip. They learned nothing about the war tunnels. Also, Eddy spoke so fast, mumbling quickly through his script that most people on the bus did not understand much of what he had to say.

As a native Gibraltarian Tommy Redman knows the Rock like the back of his hand and he showed our small group a great deal during our tour. He made contact several days in advance and reconfirmed our pick up the day before so we were looking forward to meeting him on the day. We were not disappointed.. in fact we were very impressed with Tommy's knowledge of the history of Gibraltar – both from an academic and personal aspect. He maneuvered his immaculately clean van through the narrow street and up the winding roads of the Rock with consummate skill. He had a friendly, cheerful and helpful manner at all times. We were all very happy and highly recommend his professional tour services which was true value for money spent.

The tour to Gibraltar was a great experience. Visiting the colonial of Gibraltar, seeing the biggest rock, the cave with stalagmite was very interesting, the friendly monkeys all over the park of the cave were also interesting. We had some free time for shopping, which is a great opportunity to buy some souvenirs, cigars, perfumes, etc. all for the 30% lower price of the other places. The tour guide Roman was so friendly & knowledgeable.

Guide is very fun, the bus take you to some spot which is cool but you stay 15-20 minutes to them which is not that long
