Return to page 1 of "A climb up the cathedral's tower".

I try to reassure myself, thinking,“These cracks have been here for hundreds of years. No doubt these walls have been stabilized with hidden cables and steel bars. They would not let us be up here if it wasn’t safe, would they?”

Above- Detail of gargoyles encircling a window.

My friend returns and encourages me to explore. I head down the passageway, keeping my shoulder close to the wall. When I eventually return to the catwalk, it is with a feeling of great relief.

Do you really need to be fearful about climbing up the tower? I do not believe you do. But, those of you with fear of heights will find it challenging to venture out and onto the walkways at the top of the cathedral. I do not have a big fear of heights, but for some reason the height combined with the wall cracks generated more anxiety than normal for the situation. None of the other tourists seem to share my anxiety.

If you decide to bypass the tower climb, you will miss experiencing some of the best views of the cathedral.

Ah, the door that will take me back to the catwalk.
