The
Patio de la Doncellas--The upper story
was built by Charles V.

Traveling
in the off-season means you can avoid
the tourist crowds.
Unfortunately, off-season is also
a good time for restoration work
to be done on historic monuments.
The courtyard's name is in
reference to a supposed annual
tribute of 100 virgin maidens
demanded of the Castile Kingdoms
by the Moors.

 |
According to Daniel
Eisenberg (pdf file)
the tribute of 100 maidens was in fact an
urban legend of the time.
As with other myths regarding the Moors, the
100 maidens legend was important in
motivating the Christian kingdoms to re-conquer
southern Spain.
