A fortification has been on this site
since Roman times. In 1936 Franco's
forces took refuge here and the alcazar was
almost completely destroyed. A museum
today, it is a good place to start your
visit to Toledo. While the castle is
not as awe-inspiring as the cathedral, the castle
is easy to locate from the Plaza del Zocodover.

The
Alcazar of Toledo as it appears from the
Rio Tajo.
From what I
understand, the museum within the
castle is a tribute to those that
defended the alcazar in a two month
siege during the Spanish Civil War.
Since the end of Francos regime,
there has been little change to the
exhibits within the castle.
Walking about the castle
today, it is hard to believe it was
almost totally demolished by artillery in
1936. The museum maintains a
collection of war memorabilia including a
sword collection, but I found the models
of the castle, displaying its ruined
state, of most interest.

The
Alcazar of Toledo does not allow
photography within the museum. The photo
above showing a model of the ruined
castle was taken at Museo del Ejército,
in Madrid, where photography is allowed.
