Time Line:
The ancient city of Toledo holds a unique
role in history.
- In the 4th century B.C.,
Toledo (known as Toletum by the
Romans) was used by the
Carpetanians as their capital.
- In 192 B.C., the Romans took
the city as their own and held it
until the early 5th
century, when the city fell to
the Alans and then the Visigoths.
- In the 5th century, the Visigoths made
Toledo the capital of Hispania.
Under the Visigoths. Toledo
thrived, becoming a center of
trade and culture.
- The Moors arrived in Toledo in
712 A.D.
- In 1085 A.D., El Cid assists King
Alfonso VI in the "reconquest"
of the region. Toledo is won and
becomes the capital of Castile.
- During the 12th century, Toledo becomes a
center for educational studies of
Arab scientific and literary text
while at the same time the base
for driving the Moors out of
southern Spain.
