Time Line:
The ancient city of Toledo holds a unique role in history.

In the 4^th century B.C., Toledo (known as Toletum by the Romans) was used by the Carpetanians as their capital.
In 192 B.C., the Romans took the city as their own and held it until the early 5^th century, when the city fell to the Alans and then the Visigoths.
In the 5th century, the Visigoths made Toledo the capital of Hispania. Under the Visigoths. Toledo thrived, becoming a center of trade and culture.
The Moors arrived in Toledo in 712 A.D.
In 1085 A.D., El Cid assists King Alfonso VI in the "reconquest" of the region. Toledo is won and becomes the capital of Castile.
During the 12th century, Toledo becomes a center for educational studies of Arab scientific and literary text while at the same time the base for driving the Moors out of southern Spain.
