Return to first page of Wine Tour.
 |
After tasting the wines of Ysios we returned to Laguardia to visit the last winery of our tour.
Given by the son of the owner, this private Bodega tour was our best of the day.
We met the owners' son in the street outside the Bodega and after exchanging greeting he unlocked the Bodega for our tour.
While the family has only been producing wine in Laguardia since the 1930's, they have been in the wine business from at least the 1600's.
Photo left - here the large pit once used for stomping the grapes is now covered in glass. |
Due to the difficulty of bringing grapes into an area where no vehicles are allowed, the stomping pit is no longer used in this Bodega. All the grape preparation is now done elsewhere but the cellars below are still used for fermentation.
We spent a few minutes talking and examining the relics of wine makings past (in the dry stomping pit you get to see the grape vine filter used in the stomping process), then we moved on and entered the cellars below.
In the cellars of the Bodega the wine is aged in barrel, vat and bottle.

The son speaks excellent English allowing for a lively exchange.
| Pointing at my camera the Bodega owner's son asks "You have a flash on that?" I reply, "yes". "Point it in there and take a photo" he points to a hole in the cellar wall that is covered with chicken wire. Puzzled, but obedient, I pop the flash, as I take the photo he explains, "Pop's private stash!" |

Photo right and above - The Bodega owner's son talks with my wife (out of view) prior to ascending to the top of the ladder and extracting wine from the vat. |
Meandering in the tunnels we are taken to one of the large cement vats used in the wine preparation process. scaling a ladder the son uses a large pipette to extract wine from the vat.

|
Soon we are enjoying an excellent red wine and conversation.
After completion of the wine tour our guide took us for Pinchos (pintxos), the Basque equivalent of tapas.
Tip: To receive a wine tour most Bodages require advance reservations.
